ERA & WHIP Guide

Baseball ERA and WHIP Guide

Pitching stats help parents, players, and coaches understand run prevention, command, workload, and consistency. ERA and WHIP are two of the most common pitching numbers.

ERA focuses on earned runs. WHIP focuses on baserunners. Together, they give a stronger picture of pitcher performance than wins and losses alone.

What is ERA?

Definition

ERA stands for Earned Run Average.

Formula

ERA = Earned Runs × 9 ÷ Innings Pitched.

Example

If a pitcher allows 4 earned runs in 12 innings, ERA = 4 × 9 ÷ 12 = 3.00.

What it shows

ERA estimates how many earned runs the pitcher allows per nine innings.

What is WHIP?

Definition

WHIP stands for Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched.

Formula

WHIP = (Walks + Hits Allowed) ÷ Innings Pitched.

Example

If a pitcher allows 8 hits and 4 walks in 12 innings, WHIP = 12 ÷ 12 = 1.00.

What it shows

WHIP measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows each inning.

Other pitching stats to track

Pitch Count

Pitch count shows workload and is especially important for youth pitchers.

K/9

K/9 estimates strikeouts per nine innings.

BB/9

BB/9 estimates walks per nine innings.

Strike Rate

Strike rate helps measure command and consistency.

First-Pitch Strike Rate

Getting ahead in the count often leads to better pitching outcomes.

How parents should use ERA and WHIP

Do not overreact to one game

One bad inning can distort ERA in small samples.

Track trends

Compare ERA, WHIP, strikeouts, walks, and pitch count over multiple outings.

Add notes

Record weather, rest, opponent quality, and pitch count context.

Review workload

A strong ERA does not matter if the pitcher is overused.

Frequently asked questions

Is ERA or WHIP more important?

Both are useful. ERA measures run prevention, while WHIP measures baserunners allowed.

Can a pitcher have a good ERA but high WHIP?

Yes. A pitcher may allow many baserunners but escape without many earned runs.

Should youth players track ERA?

Yes, but it should be reviewed with pitch count, walks, strikeouts, and defensive context.

Does INNING LOG calculate ERA and WHIP?

Yes. INNING LOG calculates pitching summaries from entered game data.
