Baseball Stats Glossary for Players, Parents, and Coaches
Baseball statistics can feel confusing at first, especially for parents and players who are trying to understand performance beyond the final score. This glossary explains the most common batting, pitching, game log, and player development stats in simple language.
Use this guide as a reference when reviewing a season report, comparing game logs, or deciding which numbers to track after each game. INNING LOG calculates many of these stats automatically from your game entries.

AB – At-Bats
At-bats count official batting chances. Walks, hit-by-pitches, sacrifice bunts, and sacrifice flies usually do not count as at-bats.
H – Hits
A hit is awarded when a batter reaches base safely because of a batted ball and the play is not scored as an error or fielder’s choice.
2B, 3B, HR
Doubles, triples, and home runs are extra-base hits. These are important for measuring power and total bases.
RBI – Runs Batted In
RBI shows how many runs a batter drives in through hits, walks, sacrifices, or certain outs.
BB – Walks
A walk happens when the batter reaches base after four balls. Walks help show plate discipline.
SO or K – Strikeouts
Strikeouts show how often a batter is retired without putting the ball in play. They can be reviewed together with walks and contact rate.
AVG – Batting Average
Batting average is hits divided by at-bats. It shows how often a batter gets a hit in official at-bats.
OBP – On-Base Percentage
OBP measures how often a player reaches base by hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch.
SLG – Slugging Percentage
SLG measures total bases per at-bat and gives more weight to extra-base hits.
OPS – On-Base Plus Slugging
OPS combines OBP and SLG into one number that reflects both reaching base and hitting for power.
Pitching stats
IP – Innings Pitched
Innings pitched records how many outs a pitcher completed. One out equals one-third of an inning.
ER – Earned Runs
Earned runs are runs charged to the pitcher that are not caused by defensive errors.
ERA – Earned Run Average
ERA estimates how many earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings.
WHIP
WHIP means walks plus hits per inning pitched. It measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows.
K/9
K/9 estimates strikeouts per nine innings. It helps compare strikeout ability across different workloads.
BB/9
BB/9 estimates walks per nine innings. It helps measure control and command.
Pitch Count
Pitch count tracks workload. For youth baseball, this is one of the most important pitcher safety numbers.
First-Strike Percentage
This shows how often a pitcher starts plate appearances with a strike. Higher rates often reflect better command.
Game log and development terms
Game Log
A game log is a record of each game with date, opponent, score, player stats, notes, and optional video links.
Season Summary
A season summary combines game records into year or season totals.
Quality At-Bat
A quality at-bat is a productive plate appearance even if it does not result in a hit.
RISP
Runners in scoring position means a runner is on second or third base.
Training Log
A training log records practice sessions, drills, swings, bullpen work, conditioning, and notes.
Growth Tracker
A growth tracker records height and weight changes across a player’s development years.
Frequently asked questions
What baseball stats should beginners learn first?
Start with AB, H, RBI, BB, SO, AVG, OBP, ERA, WHIP, and pitch count. These cover the basics for hitters and pitchers.
Is OPS better than batting average?
OPS gives a broader view because it combines reaching base and power. Batting average is useful, but OPS usually tells more about overall offensive production.
What pitching stats matter most for youth players?
Pitch count, innings pitched, walks, strikeouts, ERA, and WHIP are a good starting point. Pitch count is especially important for workload management.
Can INNING LOG calculate these stats automatically?
Yes. INNING LOG calculates season summaries and many rate stats from the game records you enter.
