How to Calculate Batting Average in Baseball
Batting average is one of the first baseball stats most players and parents learn. It shows how often a hitter gets a hit in official at-bats.
The formula is simple, but the details matter. Walks, hit-by-pitches, sacrifice bunts, and sacrifice flies can affect plate appearances without counting as at-bats.

Formula
Batting Average = Hits ÷ At-Bats.
Example
If a player has 12 hits in 40 at-bats, the batting average is 12 ÷ 40 = .300.
How to write it
Baseball batting average is usually written with three decimal places, such as .250, .300, or .417.
What it means
A .300 average means the player gets a hit in 30 percent of official at-bats.
What counts as an at-bat?
Counts as an AB
Most plate appearances that end in a hit, out, error, or fielder’s choice count as at-bats.
Does not count as an AB
Walks, hit-by-pitches, sacrifice bunts, and sacrifice flies usually do not count as at-bats.
Why this matters
A player can reach base without changing batting average if the result is not an official at-bat.
Parent tip
When tracking youth baseball, record AB and H after each game instead of trying to calculate the average manually.
How to track batting average over a season
Game-by-game entry
After each game, record the player’s at-bats and hits.
Season total
Add all hits and all at-bats across the season.
Recalculate
Divide season hits by season at-bats after every game.
Review with context
Batting average is useful, but review it with walks, strikeouts, OPS, quality at-bats, and contact quality.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good batting average in youth baseball?
It depends on age, league level, pitching quality, and sample size. For development, trends over time are more useful than one fixed number.
Do walks count for batting average?
No. Walks do not count as at-bats, so they do not directly affect batting average.
Can batting average go down after a walk?
No. Because a walk is not an at-bat, batting average remains unchanged.
Is batting average enough to judge a hitter?
No. Batting average should be reviewed with OBP, SLG, OPS, strikeouts, walks, and quality of contact.
